Autumn Activities for Kids

The leaves are falling and turning yellow. As the weather cools off, kids can get excited about playing outdoors. Autumn is a great season for outdoor play, especially when there’s a crisp breeze in the air. Get outside and enjoy the changing colours, smells, and sounds of Autumn.

Here are our favourite activities for kids to enjoy this Autumn.

Go Pumpkin Picking

If you live near a pumpkin farm go and pick your own pumpkins.  Where you will be able to pick your pumpkins straight from the vine.  Pumpkin picking is one of the best Autumn activities for kids.

Once you have your pumpkins home children will enjoy creating scary and seasonal carvings.

Go on an Autumn Nature Walk

Nothing beats a walk in the woods in Autumn there is so much happening and so much for children to enjoy and explore.

Collect Leaves and Cones

Children love collecting and foraging for leaves, cones and sticks. Take them home and create an Autumnal piece of artwork or collage.

Run and Jump in Leaves

With the abundance of fallen leaves on the ground, kids love walking or jumping through fallen leaves.

Spot Signs of Autumn

There are lots of signs of Autumn arriving. See if your children can spot them – falling leaves, leaves changing colour, misty mornings, fungi appearing in woodland. Migrating birds, birds flying to sunnier climes, falling seeds from trees, conkers from a Horse Chestnut, acorns and the papery Field Maple seed which helicopters down twirling in the wind. Squirrels scurrying around the undergrowth collecting acorns and seeds for their winter hibernation.

Build a Den

Always a favourite activity for our family. Children love making dens and creating somewhere to hang out. Making a den in woodland is easy as you have so many natural building resources around you. Take a flask of hot chocolate with you so you can all enjoy spending time in the new den.

Our range of outdoor toys will encourage children to go outside and explore this Autumn.

Play Hide and Seek with a Torch

With the nights drawing in playing hide and seek with a torch outside can be so much fun! An exciting activity and game for a Halloween party perhaps?

Have a sleepover

Organise a sleepover and watch a scary movie.  Children will love settling down on the sofa with blankets and hot chocolate after their walk in the woods.  Our favourite scary movies in our house for kids are The Little Vampire, Miss Peregrines Home for Peculiar Children and Scooby Doo…

Have a Halloween Party

Kids love Halloween because it gives them an excuse to dress up and go trick-or-treating. Have a Halloween party and enjoy some Autumnal fun inside with party games and spooky food.

Autumn Crafts for Children

There are so many craft activities for children to celebrate the arrival of Autumn. Here are some of our favourites.

Make A Scarecrow or Guy Fawkes

Autumn is the time when seeds are planted and farmers need to scare away crows and birds from their fields. A scarecrow will do the job. Or if you prefer to make a Guy Fawkes for your bonfire party, all you need is some old clothes, a hat and stuffing like straw or leaves.

Press Leaves

Collect fallen leaves and use our Botanical Flower Press to preserve them and then create a leaf collage or Autumnal artwork.

Bake something Spooky

If you’re looking for some Halloween treats for your little ones, try baking some spooky cookies. You can use cookie cutters to create scary faces, pumpkins, ghosts, bats, spiders, witches, and other creepy creatures. Or, you can simply decorate plain chocolate chip cookies with sprinkles and coloured icing.

You can use any type of cookie dough recipe you like, but our favourite is Millie’s Cookies.

Millie’s Cookie Recipe

125g softened butter

100g Light brown soft sugar

125g caster sugar

1 egg, lightly beaten

1 tsp vanilla extract

225g self-raising flour

1/2 tsp salt

200g chocolate

Method

Preheat heat oven to 180c, cream butter and sugars. Once creamed, combine with the egg and vanilla.

Sift in the flour and salt, then mix in the chocolate chips. Roll into small balls, flatten and place on an ungreased baking tray. Bake for 7 minutes if you want the authentic Millies experience. The cookies will be really doughy and delicious otherwise cook for 3 minutes longer for a golden finish.
